Medical Devices

Optical treatment and measurement

Medical devices that use optical techniques to both measure treat are at the forefront of medical device development now.

  • Absorption spectroscopy being used to measure blood constituents, e.g., blood sugar.
  • Infrared treatment to speed the healing of wounds.
  • UVC treatment to kill pathogens. See Photon Therapeutics for whom the EM has done a good deal of work.
  • Many other applications from which treatment with specific wavelengths that cause beneficial changes at an atomic level.

The core technologies that underpin this are LEDs and lasers complying with ISO 60825. The EM knowledge of developing such products.

Anaesthesia

The world of medical devices and anaesthesia covers almost every engineering discipline imaginable, but the following are of particular note:

  • Pneumatics
  • Control systems
  • flow measurement
  • Compliance with standards

The EM has experience of the design of ventilators, circle absorbers, vaporisers, etc. Please feel free to contact us if you have an anaesthesia medical product question/issue.

ECG Medical Devices

ECGs’ remain the main vehicle for clinicians to assess heart condition properly, but the devices are now common place in he world of the amateur – fit watches, etc. The EM has designed ECGs and considered whilst doing so that the following were key disciplines:

  • High quality analogue electronics design
  • Compliance with standards
  • Pneumatics
  • DSP (digital signal processing) – optimum and matched filtering.
  • Waveform analysis

If you wish to know more or have an ECG related project, please don’t hesitate to contact us using the green button below.

Ventilators (design)

Ventilator designs are complex mechanical devices with control electronics to suit. In essence, most of them are constant flow generators that switch on and off in order to deliver specified volumes of gas to patients that are anaesthetised to a level that means they are unable to breathe for themselves.

The control of such devices has for many years boiled down to electronics at the embedded level, but AI and AIoT are challenging this model.

The EM has ventilator design experience (mechanical, pneumatic, and electrical). Please feel free to use the Contact Us button if you would like to know more.

Prosthetics

Over the last couple of decades, prosthetics has advanced. It is not that long ago that designs were entirely mechanical, but now electronics and advanced firmware have transformed prosthetics such that normal and prosthetic gaits are indistinguishable. The algorithms, compliance, testing and electronics are advanced.

The EM has experience of the design of electronics and testing mechanisms for such products. If you wish to know more click the Contact Us link below.
