Frequently asked questions

Every project is different, and many things affect the timeline.

Some projects can be as short as a month, or as long as a few years, but on average the projects we handle are completed in 3 months to a year.

There are many factors that will affect the timeline, such as

These will be addressed early in your project.

Firstly and most importantly, book a call with us or send us an email.

From there we will ask you some questions about your project, the goals you have in mind and your ideal timeline.

We will then submit a proposal and estimate ready to start things off.

The main phases of a project are

  • Discovery
  • Specification
  • Detail Design
  • Prototype Manufacture
  • Testing

At each phase there is a review stage so you can sign off on the works.

This is to get you to a completed prototype. Should there be a requirement to get to volume manufacture, there are other considerations.

Please see our One Page Guide on Prototype to Manufacture for more information.

The aim of a specification is to get all the details of your project written down with testable criteria.

This is an in depth process, and if you don’t know all of the aspects, don’t panic.

We are here to help you during this phase.

Communication is key to any positive project.

We conduct weekly progress meetings, or more often if required for the stage of the project. Supplementary meetings are welcome and often market and technical needs are expressed through them.

We also use project planning software to keep you up to date with the project.

We bill based upon hours worked on a monthly basis, with an estimate provided up front.

We operate a policy of active budget management and cover this at our weekly progress meetings.

New customers and those with a poor payment history are required to pay proforma for works.

There are many factors that can affect the cost

  • Desired timeline
  • Complexity of the design
  • Specification Creep

By actively managing the budgetary aspect, we avoid technical and/or commercial shocks and surprises during your development.

In general, we do not know your market, and wouldn’t be able to give the time required to truly understand it, therefore we would not offer such a discount.

We primarily use Altium for electronics design, SkyCAD for electrical design works and Solidworks for mechanical design.

For firmware and software we use C and embedded compilers as are appropriate to the project.

If you have a preferred software package, please let us know and we can discuss this.

We operate under ISO9001:2015.

Developing an electronic product can be costly, but the UK government provides tax relief for companies engaged in specific R&D projects. R&D tax credits can significantly reduce your corporation tax liability, making it essential to consult both a tax professional and your chosen design firm about available credits. Since tax laws frequently change, staying informed is crucial. You can find the latest UK R&D tax regulations here.

R&D tax credits on your project belong to you, we do not claim any via your project.

We are happy to sign an NDA, or can provide our mutual NDA upon request.
We also ensure that suppliers are covered under NDA before we discuss specifics of your project with them.

Patents, Trademarks, Copyrights and design rights are all topics that should be covered with an intellectual property expert (Patent Attorney). We can help with introductions and reducing the cost of this.

This is handled via our terms and conditions which should give you confidence that you control and have ownership of your IP.

We can arrange prototype manufacture for you. We have preferred suppliers for prototyping who’s quality can be relied on, reducing errors and testing time.

Yes and we can cover a wide range of capabilities via a range of manufacturing partners.
