It is essential that the Electronics Developer has Connections to Other Industry Experts

The electronic and general new product introduction market is appallingly fragmented and has been stuck so almost since inception. Every product development is different, but any one is likely to need many different sorts of expertise: the experts are rarely in contact with each other and difficulties that bridge expertise profiles are often left to clients to resolve. Looking from the perspective of a client trying to bring a product to market, the service is disparate, risky and obscure. It is little wonder that product developments often fail.

A classic market maturity model goes through five growth phases:

• Concept creation
• Concept development
• Market development
• Business optimisation
• Maturity

Arguably, product development is stuck in the market development phase because there is no foundational point of reference from which all the expertise in the image above come together.

Obviously, it would be a tall order for any single supplier to provide all of the above, but it is entirely reasonable for a client to expect a developer to know the key requirements of any of the above and to have active and open relationships with every other major area of expertise.
