Case Study: River Monitoring Device for the Environment Agency (UK)
Environment and waste is one of the most important topics of our time: and it receives ever greater attention. Wireless collection of Ecological data for the Environment Agency is an EM project that dovetails with this.
Challenge: The Environment Agency was incurring very significant costs having technicians visit remote rustic locations to collect environmental data from monitoring equipment. The project developed the necessary hardware and firmware via wireless link to report the data directly. This resulted in significant savings.
Solution: Mobile networks were utilised to transmit the data via SMS. The project was conducted prior to the more advanced IoT technologies being available – as today, but it was very effective in solving the problem.
Skills:
- Electronics embedded design
- Wireless modem implementation
- Hayes AT communications protocol for SMS communications
Journey: This project was successful but emphasized the need for thorough specification of requirements.
